As I was discussing yesterday, I really was apprehensive to call my nurse about my son's horrible pains the past few days. Others have asked why I wouldn't switch pediatrician's if the nurse was so rude the first time. But, aside from that one instance, I love our doctor and the staff has been nothing but nice to us every time he's had an appointment. Luckily i kept an open-mind because I decided to bite the bullet and call. I mean, hey, it's my son that's in pain and I'm not going to worry if they're rude; he comes first. This nurse was FABULOUS! She talked to me for a lengthy time about rice cereal and how NO child is the same and there's no "bible" for how to raise your child. It's a learning experience and usually the child will let you know what is working and what's not. I loved her attitude. She basically just gave me advice based on her own experience. Having a baby certainly has shed a new light on how I teach. I used to be so critical of parents for how they were raising their children, but now I no better. Who am I to judge how they do things? How circumstances go at home may be entirely different than what I see at school or in a fleeting moment during parent conferences or a school carnival. All you can do is hope that you learn from the mistakes you're making along the way and do it better the next time.
The nurse told me I could stop the rice cereal altogether until his stomach was able to handle it a little better or I could give it another 3-4 days and keep up the Mylicon Drops. She said, trying them once a day and then saying they don't work wasn't going to cut it. Who knew?! She wanted me to keep up with them every 2 hours and see if he started to improve. We talked some more and she asked if he was truly sleeping through the night (none of this 6 or 7 hour stuff that books classify as sleeping through the night). I told her that he typically was waking up at 2 and 6. In turn she told me that maybe I did want to keep up with the rice cereal as it's more filling with the drops and try to get him to break the bad habit he'd gotten into. She thought he was waking up at these times out of habit and suggested I let him cry through the night. But, if I wasn't ready or ever ready to do this I didn't have to. This is what I loved! Somebody with recommendations but none of this "know it all" attitude that I can't stand. We've decided to keep up with the rice cereal and last night and today have gone much more smoothly. I think he's finally adapting to the new food. I'm going to let his belly have a rest for the next several days and then in the near future start letting him cry through the night (this will be SO HARD)! Belly crying is what gives him a lot of painful gas which is why I want to wait until we're sure everything has settled from the cereal. Ugh. Letting your kid cry (I mean, screaming cry) is VERY difficult. I hope you don't mind me sharing my "inexperience" with being a new mom on here.
